May as well be the first with my opinion , id put it at about an XF-45 as a healthy start. I notice some nice but usual die cracks which makes this an interesting study.

EF-45 sounds about right.

A majority of the weakness in seeing looks to due to a weak strike. Strong points of the reverse rim (K5-K11) and dentils show little wear. I'm at AU50/53
Edit: reverse scratches on shield may net it to AU50

Easily XF. And low AU wouldn't surprise me.

I'm at AU Details, 94 code (altered surfaces).
The gouge just west of the "5" on the reverse has been reduced by sanding or buffing. It's not a distraction, though, it's not on the obverse, and the coin has a nice appearance.

Please explain to us how you can determine from this pic that that "gouge" has been altered and apparently recolored?

IMHO, the gouge was sanded to reduce the raised area where the metal would have been deposited. The tooling marks run through the gouge and well across the field SE of the gouge. There is an oval-shaped area of discoloration surrounding the entire altered area that runs from the second point of the 12th star to just west of the ball of the five. Here's the enhanced cropped photo. I'm definitely not dug in with this opinion, but it was my first impression. Thoughts?

To be honest, I just don't see it. The whole reverse looks natural to me.

I think the weak strike is easy to distinguish from wear or circulation like Ty2020b mentioned. The divot on the reverse looks like a planchet flaw as opposed to a gouge imho... EF-45/AU-50 for me. Nice Nic! smat

typical weak parts here and there. AU53 as for the area to left of the 5. thats a tough call. if it was a gouge and attempted sanding I would think it would have affected more of the surrounding devices as thats such a tight area. on the other hand there are striations in the gouge that I dont think could have came from a planchet flaw.

I'd say EF40, worried about the scratches on the shield though.
