I have two unopened/sealed mint bags of $50.00 1960 pennies. They are from the Philadelphia Mint. The front of the bag reads:
U.S. Mint Philadelphia CENT $50 TFB 1960
1. How can I tell if they are small or large date without opening them? 2. If they are small date, what would be the best way to market them? Individually or unsealed? 3. Would a service grade them all? Would it be worth it?

Hi dsteh Welcome to the forum .
There is really no way of knowing whats in the bags unless you open them ,If you don't want to undo all the sewing , then just make a small slit so you can slide a couple of coins out , the bags will not (or should not be mixed) whatever is in there is good for the whole bag .
How to sell them really depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it , singularly you may realise a bit more by the bag quick and easy , slabbed ?(I would choose only the best of the best , there is little value in slabbing the low grades even in mint state .
please let us know what you got and if you can maybe a picture or two ?

If there are dates (day and month) on the bags, that might help to determine if they are small or large dates.

No dates on bags other than the year. Looks like I'll have to open a bag.
Pics will take a few days as my digital camera is not working. I'll have to take them the old fashioned way and put them to disc.
Thanks for your help.

take it to the dentist office and see if they could x-ray it, you should be able to read a date then--most dentist offices use comp. x-rays so there is no cost.

I don't know about yours, but my insurance doesn't cover numismatic x-rays.

I'd really like to know if your x-ray shows a date.

Image Insert: What to look for in a 1960 small date: easiest way I have found is notice the "9" is slightly even or lower than the "1". the "0" is thicker Plus there are a ton of errors in this year! I have found a bunch personally. check out other post or coppercoins.com is a great reference...and a member -Tom

Quote: I'd really like to know if your x-ray shows a date. Most metal x-rays show metal as white or gray. If you make a few alterations to the machine you can get a bit more detail but not enough for dates

Quote: 1. How can I tell if they are small or large date without opening them? Consult a psychic. Quote: the bags will not (or should not be mixed) whatever is in there is good for the whole bag . Not quite true. The bag will typically be a mixture of the output of seveal different dies. So even if you did have a small date that would not guarantee that all the cents in the bag would be small dates. Quote: Well if you swallow a coin and it gets stuck your insurance would cover it But since he wants to find out without opening the bag he'd have to swallow the whole bag. Should be an interesting x-ray.
