PCGS - Belgium is an often-underappreciated country in terms of numismatics and collecting. This is especially true when looking at the great value offered by their gold issues, usually trading at bullion levels. These pieces offer tremendous history, much variety, and are easily obtainable and affordable. While gold coinage from King Leopold I is available, most pieces fall out of the bullion-value range. It is the coinage of King Leopold II and Albert that are available at prices near their spot value and are often considered bullion coinage.

King Leopold II is one of history's more dichotomous figures. Looking at him with a modern perspective, he is easily considered a monster for the horrendous acts committed under his rule and in his name. Yet during his 44-year reign of Belgium as its monarch, he built up the nation domestically investing the ill-gotten wealth from his colonial exploits into private and public buildings throughout his country. The success of King Leopold II came at the cost of the colonization of Congo, a private project with Leopold II as the sole owner of Congo Free State. The atrocities that occurred in Congo led to the term "crimes against humanity" being coined to describe the practices that during under this colonization.
