The mint mark looks repunched to me, maybe FS-501?

Thanks for any input.

Edit: Sorry, I posted the mintmark for my 1953 S Franklin, replaced with the mint mark in question from the '51 S...the mini goiter from before was also from the '53...my apologies, got my Franklins mixed up :/

Just looks like a 70 year old coin to me. See what others have to say

Well because the mintmark looks like a listed/graded example, note the direction of the RPMs:
http://www.varietyvista.com/11%20Fr...%201951S.htm
None are on that area. So the RPMs are in a different area, than the area you are showing. There are several examples of the FS-501 example on PCGS, The first example is showing the same event on the area of the mintmark. But it could be a die chip, or metal movement from a contact mark. But looking at the other examples, all the other examples do not have that area affected. So it is not a RPM because of a match to that mark. But you might look below to see of yours is a RPM or not. Take a look at the Variety Vista Site to see if your coin looks like that there?

Thanks Coop, I did check VV and a site called FranklinLover before posting but found no matches, I will keep looking...I will start using PCGS' listings of DD/rpm's as well to compare going forward.

I agree with Spence. Tired Franklin with a nasty fingerprint to boot. At least it's silver!
