Hi everybody.

I have found a $5 test note AN97,( )and sent it to PCGS.( It came back with a VF30.Maybee they were a little bit hard with the grade, but its Ok. I really dont know a lot about banknotes.
Usually, I collect coins, so banknote is not my speciality.

My question are : Is this banknote really rare as many say?
What should be it price?
to your opinion, how many AN97 exist (if you know information I havent?), sale or if you have one or see others?

I repeat that banknote is not my speciality, so I really dont know who trust.(book, seller) And I dont know the "market" for this one? (book value? less? more? if it as rare as some say maybee more than book say?)

Thanks for all your replies, advices and help.

i personally don't consider myself a note collector, but is looks to be very rare test note and from catalog possibly $1000 have no idea to be frank, my guess is any of the larger auction place might have come across this particular note from time to time but if you can get that much for it I don't know.

Hi aussiebanknote and to the forum!

Most likely you haven't received many replies because maybe not many people are aware of the existence of this type of note. I had to use google to find out what a test note is http://www.polymernotes.com/austral...ecolour.html
I'm sure that someone with some expertise in this area will be along shortly to assist you.

i know some information about this note.
Its a first prefix test note AN97, as the book say, very rare. Less than 25 000. But when people discovered their existence, it was many years later, so it was difficult to find some, in UNC, especially the AN (first prefix). And cause its a $5 and not a $100, these banknote travelled a long time, hand to hand, customers to sellers, in the pocket, in the pub... You understand that a $5 note is more using than a $100 note, that is too, finding a $5 test note AN97, is hard, and finding one in VF or more is really hard too, maybee impossible now, despite the money you could offer. The 3 others test note AN97 I have seen were in poor condition, or just a little bit better than poor but not equal to mine.
One started many years ago in auction at 600$ but did more than 1500$.

I hoped than australian collectors who are "in" the market and in the country maybee have more information about "maybee" other AN97, or if they have or see others. This item could be unique cause his grade so I know it could be hard to estimate it. Maybee giving a price is "subjective", depending more the collectors than the book. For example a DN97 UNC is proposing to 7000$.
Maybee nobody could tell me a "right price" of this banknote cause the raritie and the really short amount about AN97 still existing. So the price depend just about collectors?

But if somebody know more, I am open. (other auction, grade, other exemples of An97)
Thanks all.

... and out of interest, did you come across this note by chance or were you specifically searching for it?

yep, Coaster, it was this one I saw at an auction..

And yep, I found it.
The true story : I came to Australia, 10 years ago, when I was 28/29 . I came with a working hollyday visa and stayed 1 year in this "lovely" country. As I was a "collector", arriving at Sydney, one of the think I did, among drinking beers, opening an account, and many other things is "buying a book of australian coins and banknote".( Greg mCdonald 17th edition)... So I collected all the different circulation coins I saw (50c, $1) and sometimes I kept banknotes( 1st and last prefix, or trying to found "special" number(solid/semi solid/radar/repeateater)... And I was lucky to found 3/4 $100 test note (all at the crown casino melbourne)and 3/4 $5 test note. But nothing highly interesting... When I travelled to "big towns" I always went to coins dealer, but to look for "ancient" French coins, not aussie..(in all, I just found 3 interesting French coins I baught, at Adelaide)..Sometimes I stopped and look the cash converters or "antic stuff sellers".. I found a gold english sovereign Georges at a cash converter for a little amount.(less than $200)

At the middle of my trip, I worked 2 months at renmark( a small town, in the south, but I dont remember exaclty where), packaging orange/lemon.
I rented and lived in a caravan and in this town, there were a coles and a woolworth.. At the woolworth, they selled 4 different chocolate bar (milk, dark, fruit and an other). The first time, I baught some bar, and when I paid, it was a "machine"(not a human), the change was with this special test note... So, yep, I was lucky... Then I came back to this shop, nearly every day, paying all the time every chocolate bar separately and with "big" banknote, in order to have an other interesting banknote at the change. I came, baught 3 bars... Paid, 1 bar, with a $50 or $20 note, then the second, with an other $50 or $20 $, and the same with the 3rd. But I didnt found an other one, and I just "win" lot of kilos/pounds/weight..

At the end of my trip, I dedided to see a dealer at Melbourne, just before the new year event at sydney and my departure. If I rememberer, it was downies, and I show him my banknotes. He said that they are not a lot interesting,(collecting polymer banknote and number were "new") and the grade are not UNC. So a little bit upset, I decide to spend all the banknotes I have kept. (of course , excepting this AN, cause I knew, it wasnt common)..

At my return, I kept the 3 french coins, the gold soveriegn, some circulating coins(less than $4/5) and this banknote.

This banknote came from a machine , in a woolworth, at Renmark, during July/AUgust 2010...

Ahahahahahha..;

Nice find. I have found one in circulation but they are quite scarce.
I don't have a book handy but working out the print run shouldn't be hard - the RBA site has the info too.

Yep , you are right Mr T, on the RBA site, there are some info.
But cause they are testnote, info are approximative. They mentionne the mint, but let everybody think, that, maybee It could have mystakeS.the fact, that AN is the first issue/prefix and the fact that a lot of $5 testnote could be found in INC, except the AN, we could think that the mint of AN is very low.
Thats why I ask for "personal" information (if somebody saw some or have an AN testnote), and the differents prices and maybee "add", given by the 2 books mentionned.(renniks and mcdonald)

Does any other member collect $5 test note? or polymer?

And about your banknote, is it an AN too? what is it grade, according to you? Could yu post a photo/picture?
