Interesting thing happened today. Someone offered to sell me a 1975 silver dollar. Now I know that there are no silver dollars that were minted with that date, could he be referring to some sort of commemorative or error coin that was made that year?

No commemoratives were issued between the 1950s and 1982 and there is no way it can be an error with a wrong date. Possibly the person was confused with the bicentennial coins that were issued in 1975 and 1976 or it is just a Chinese fantasy piece...

yeah, those guys can make anything. I might just have them make me a nice Roman coin with the date 199 BC on it.

Technically isn't a 1976 type 1 Ike a 1975?

Technically, yes; since all them were minted in 1975.

Also, all 1776-1976 dated 40% silver Eisenhower dollars are Type 1, so they are all technically 1975 as well.

Well back in the day when I was younger, a lot younger, I always heard the Ikes referred to as "silver" dollars. Could this be what was offered to you?

With Tim, it could just be a regional thing, many people around these parts call any Ike a "silver dollar", my feeling is it translates to "big 'ole coin".

But there aren't any Ike dollars with a 1975 date on them...not even of the clad (non-silver) type.

Here's a link to 1975 proof set with an Ike dollar:

Yes the Ike is dated 1776-1976 but I'd bet that's what this person is referring to.
