I picked up a few broadstruck nickels today. They all appeared uncirculated. This coin caught my eye. At first I thought some foreign substance after minting while it was in the wild got on the coin. I looked with some magnification and now I wonder if this is a combo of die grease and metal from minting process that is now part of the coin. I have gently scratched at the metal on the edge with my fingernail and nothing happened. Should I soak in acetone and see what happens? Any way this happened during minting? Thanks

I would soak it in acetone for about 24 hours and see happens.
It doesn't look like anything that could happen during the striking of the coin.

Thanks JimmyD! I will try that . I wasn't sure with it being a broadstrike if the lack of collar pressure could have allowed a "glob" of grease and metal to enter that area.

How attached is it? Fingernail loosen it. It might respond to a soak. But I tend not to adjust surfaces that are still mint. I only use mineral oil to remove grime on devices on circulation examples only. You might try a vertical soaking on just the blackened area? That way not the full coin may not be affected.

Coop - fingernail did not loosen the edge material nor did I see any scratches in the area. Great idea on the vertical soak.

May I ask, what is the value of something like this?

How to do that safely? Try putting a wooden clothespin or two on the edge of the coin. This will help keep it vertical. The second one might be used to prevent it from falling over.

Coinfrog - I am interested in the value as well. Not sure if there is anything more than a broadstrike here or not.
