I found a 1975 D mint penny. This penny weighs 3.06 grams but the copper finish peeled off leaving a beautiful silver like tone that is not magnetic. Any ideas?

You are right. But if you use a wire brush on a copper coin. You still have copper coloring not silver.

The penny was plated and is peeling in areas showing the copper underneath. Scratch a silver area and see.

That copper layer was the top finish. It rubbed off. not the silver.
