1998 penny. What causes this to happen? Entire coin looks like this. Coin doesn't look like its been in circulation very long. Its in really good condition except for whatever caused surface to look like it does.

Possibly acid or other corrosive chemical.
It didn't look like that when it was struck so it is some sort of damage.

Hard to tell what caused the damage. Search "dryer coin."

I honestly cant see it being acid or a chemical. There is no damage to words, Lincoln or memorial.

The whole coin, letters and all are damaged. Definitely acid post mint damage.

This is a plated coin. If it was acid, the plating would be gone. This is damage from impact from something.

Does it matter what happened to it? There are some errors that happen at the mint. PMD are created after. Officially there are over a million ways to cause PMD.

Yep, there are just too many ways damage can happen to ever figure it out. But knowing how coins are made, it is easy to see that there is no way in the minting process it could have happened. That one is really beat up.

The coin was heavily battered outside the Mint. Similar to vending machine damage.
Error coin writer and researcher.
