How many varieties of '53 Dollars are there? Charlton doesn't seem to be very clear on the subject. Kind of conflicting info. Am I correct to think there are three? FWL - SWL - ARN? Or are there just FWL and SWL.?

There is no ARN and I believe Charlton's is clear about that.
There are: NSF, FWL and SWL;
SF, FWL and SWL
There are also some minor varieties.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

On the contrary Charlton is not very clear on this, as well as several other points.

One of the reasons I am confused is that the coin with the longer waterlines in the preceding pictures was sold to me, and labeled, as short waterlines by a dealer at Torex. So it would be nice to clear this up.

The dealer was correct, that is the SWL variety.

If your second photo is a 1953 can you please post clearer photos?

That would be a SWL; you can still see the lowest water line
