That's probably the healthiest way to be, Ętheling.

Unfortunately, I have this sickness when I want my coin pics to be exactly like what I see in my hand. Couple that with the fact that I am cheap and don't want to buy hundreds of dollars worth of equipment, I am totally ignorant about any kind of photography, and I don't want to work to hard getting the shots right, it just makes it worse. ;)

Fortunately, I think I may have everything figured out now and my shots are coming out nice with little effort and no extra money.

It's a case of taking the time to learn, a few accidents later (accidents akin to apples falling off of trees onto random physists sat nearby) and you soon learn what gets good results. Remember them for next time and it'll become routine before you know it!

I can't help you with the photo-ing as life.

Just tried out the idea suggested in the link that lim118 posted, using the plastic bottle. I think it works great. Check out the photo and make up your own minds. Unfortunately, my lens is on one side, so I can't use the timer as the camera is not balanced on top of the bottle. I'll work on that.

I made up a little guide to what I have learned this weekend that has improved my pictures a lot. Mayhbe a couple of people can at least get a tip or two out of it.

http://www.stujoe.com/content/view/47/45/

Keep in mind it is written by an unknowledgeable photo taker who wanted to do it on the cheap and doesn't know any of the technical stuff behind photography. It is not perfect, may not work for everyone and I am sure there are other methods out there that would be better. But, for a total outlay of maybe $25 (plus a run of he mill digital camera), it has improved the clarity of my pictures many times over.

I never could have taken the pictures I posted above before this.

Here are a couple of other shots:

They may not be perfect and a couple might need color corection, but they are much better than anything I have ever done before and, best of all, I am able to repeat them over and over again with no guesswork.

OK they're visible now. Which year are these 5 and 50 c coins minted? Hedgehog (if that doesn't have any specific name:) looks nice on the coin.

Renal,

The 5 cent coin has a Echidna on it. Which is a sort of ant eater. This coin has run since 1966 upto the present bacically unchanged. With limited mintage in 1972 and mint and proof set only in 1985 and 1986. I think the only change is to the obverse. The Queens picture has changed twice. (you can't stay young forever LOL). The 50 cent is 2004 vintage or is that mintage! This coin also ran from 1966 (round one), then changed to its current shape in 1969. The obverse has also changed the same as the 5 cent. The reverse has changed many times. This also has limited mintages in 1985 and 1993, also mint and proof sets only in 1986, 1987, 1989,1990 and 1992.

Hope you find this useful.

Regards
Steve

I have long since been convinced of the superiority for coin images of digital cameras over scanners, even high quality scanners such as I have. I have pushed and tweaked my scanner to its outer limits and still have the luster (lusterless, actually) problem. My present digital camera is too basic and will also not do what I want: it's close-up function is still very poor quality, so am working at selecting and buying a new digital camera. I'll be creating a new topic on the subject shortly.

Many thanks to all for some very nice images of very nice coins!

Scanned coins have always looked strange to me. The devices appear to be incuse. It was clearly explained in a thread a while back. It seems it has to do with the perception your brain has of the image. If I find the old thread I will post a link to it. It was very interesting! Mike
