Hello. I am new to the hobby having just received my father's coin collection. I have bought a few books and have read enough to be dangerous. I have bunches of questions but I will start with just a few:

1)if you are collecting a series, what type of holders do you recommend, for example, Dansco?

2)two of the coins my father gave me are 1909 S VDBs. He bought them in the early 80s from a local coin shop. one is marked Fine and the other very fine. I am having them appraised by a local coin shop, but if they are truly in those conditions should I send to an independent coin grading company?

3)I have read somewhere about the new gold buffalo coin to be issued by the US Mint. the article I read indicated that these would be released in June of this year. Is that still the case and where can you purchase one? The Mint's Product Schedule doesn't list them.

4)I also received a number of Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I think I want to start small in collecting a set so I was thinking about Sacagawea dollars. Should I break open some of the duplicate Proof and Uncirculated Sets to get those coins to begin my sets? If so, should I do that myself or send off the sets to have it done?

Thanks for any help. I look forward to learning as much as I can from everyone.

Hi big orange fan

First off good for you for taking the time to read and ask questions,,Your off to a great start !!

1 Types of storage vary among collectors, based upon storage area, and or room ,, type of coins and how much you want to spend to protect your coins.

Many of my circulated coins with minimum value I store in simple 2x2 mylar coin holders,, I also have circulated wheats in the whitman books,, for the more valuble (at least to me ) coins I store them in the round airtites,, I like being able to easily handle my coins, so these work well for me.

some other choices are the intercept sheild holders, or in the case of some the key date coins in a TPG slab.

2 I personally would probly have them slabbed especially if there is an intent to part with them !!

authentication is a must for the 09-S VDB.

3 These coins I believe are scheduled for release, They should be available from the mint , but without a doubt they will be available on the secondary market,, just when they are due to be released, I'm afraid I have not followed this coin closely enough to have that info,, But I'm sure someone will have it as other opionions on these questions get posted.

4 breaking these sets is one way to get the single coins into your collection, but Have you considered what to do with the remainder of the coins ?

I myself do break some sets to get the dimes and cents that I collect,, and I end up with proof singles of other coins that I dont seriously collect, they can be used to trade ,,or sell,, but sometimes those coins set for a long long time before I can use them attain other coins that I need or sell them.

Hope these simple answers help !! But alot of collecting coins becomes a very persoanl thing with alot of personal preferences which I'm sure your on your way to developing !!

Rick

Welcome again Big_Orange_Fan! The fact that the Lincoln SVDB's are keys, and valuable even in those grades I would reccomend getting them slabbed and authenticated. The holders offer a decent measure of protection as well. There are are three or four reputable grading services. The top three are recognized as PCGS, NGC and ANACS with ICG and PCI gaining in popularity. ANACS does not require any kind of membership to make submissioins. I'm not sure about PCI and ICG but PCGS and NGC require joining a "club" before allowing direct submissions. Some dealers who are members will do this for you for a fee.
Dansco albums are quite nice, but much depends on how you want to display and house your coins.

I think mid-june is when the buffalo 1 oz. gold is going to be released. I don't know if they will be available directly from the mint or if you have to go through an authorized dealer to get them. I understand half, quarter and tenth oz. versions? will be available later on.

My daughter has a complete set of MS 64-65-66 Franklin half dollars in a Dansco album. However, she opted to keep all the proofs from that series in the ANACS, NGC and PCGS slabs to help preserve them. If you do decide to break them out, handle them with great care! Make sure when you slide the plastic inserts in the album over the coins they do not "rub" the surfaces of the coins. Do not touch anything but the edges of the coin and use clean soft cotton gloves made for coin handling. Finger grease will appear as a print down the road.

Have fun and I think you have some great ideas for building your collection!!! Mike

1. I Really like dansco both there duluxe and folders, The main reason is becuse I think they look classy also it seem like almost all coin shop carry the deluxe albums. If it were me I would stick with one brand and go with it that way if you ever display them in a bookshelf they would look nice.

2. About the 1909 s VDB if they are real I would send them into one of the top 3 grading company. I would sugest ANACS since you do not need to pay for a membership. if not then then sind it to PCGS, NCG I would say don't send it to anyone else you would be wasting money.

3. I am not sure I will reread some of the article in Coin World to see if there is a date listed there but I am sure someone here will know since. I am sure all of the special set come out about the same time.. like the prestine set and so on.

4. I would say if you have extra set then that would be the best way to go. and yes you can do it yourself make sure the other coins you take out of the proof or mint set you put in Airtie holder that way they stay nice. Think the Sac Dollar is a good place to start not really alot to get and they will be made thru the Presidents Dollar Seires. But it might be cheaper to go out and buy the P and D mints unless you are going to use the other coins for something. I know my dealer has them for 2-4 dollars for P and D.

Hi. Welcome. This is a great place to learn and everyone here is as nice as they can be. You're in good hands.

Others have implied this, but you absolutely should send your Lincoln 1909-S VDB's in because there are a lot of fakes out there. In Fine and Very Fine, those coins are valuable enough to justify the cost of sending the coins in. I recommend NGC. You can submit coins directly if you are either a member of the ANA (that costs about $50 I think), or by joining the Collector's Society, which although it's nearly $100, they give you five vouchers for free grading and access to their wonderful and informative website. The other option is PCGS, but their collector's society doesn't give you free vouchers for joining. Plus, I just like NGC better because they have a friendly helpful attitude. Not that PCGS doesn't. Whatever. ANACS does not require you to join anything to submit. They grade very strictly in my opinion (therefore reliable). Plus they have groovy new holders.

As to holders, I use saflips for my less expensive coins. Soft plastic holders cause coins to become sometimes irreversibly damaged by PVC infestation. It's best to avoid those except for very temporary storage. I buy my supplies from Amos. Their online site is, I believe, https://www.amosadvantage.com. I use CoinEdge holders. They are designed to show the coins edge, and there are pages that are also offered so you can store your CoinEdge holdered coins in attractive binders. There a little more expensive, and you have to buy them by size (1c, 25c, 50c, $1, etc). There are lots of other good options available from that website. You can get cotton gloves and mailers there too, which will come in handy, I promise, if you continue with the hobby.

The Buffalo bullion coin was mandated by Congress to be produced no later than June 22. Apart from the sketches and the fact that Congress has also required the gold used to be from U.S. or territories or possessions, very little info has become available. Sure hope gold waits to hit $2,000 and ounce until AFTER I get mine. Stick around. I'd love to follow your progress.
