Surface detail does not show clearly in either set of pics.

If not, I'll probably delete this post and start over.

I don't see proof like but maybe just the pics . If the check scrape is just the luster I'll toss out 65 . They tend to grade 81S tough. My 65 looks prooflike and 66

From some of the pics it *might* go PL. Probably 64-65.

I don't see proof like in the photos. You are looking for more of a cameo look for a proof like designation.

The images you've posted show the obverse fields as a bit hazy and probably would not receive a PL designation. MS64 for me.

I think it might push MS65. So what's the VAM question?

To me it looks more like a VAM 1 than anything else, but I don't see the markers in the first 8 of the date. I keep going over the VAMs but so far have been unable to match it to one.

Don't wear yourself out trying to VAM an 1881-S. This issue can be one of the toughest to nail down if you don't have a smoking gun S/S mint mark, VAM-1B or VAM-54B ( VAM of the year btw) Of the 10 examples I have only one I have been able to attribute as a VAM-13, an S/S.

Thank you Dave700x. I guess I'll put this down, I've spent a pretty good amount of time on it and without your comment, who knows how long I would have chased my tail?
