Looking for any information on this penny, it would be very appreciated. My husband has recently started collecting coins and this is just one of his interesting finds. I am adding a picture of both front and back of the coin. It is a 1981 D Thank you so much in advance for any information on the coin!!

to CCF Can you do me a favor and measure the width in the black mark on your coin to see if it is the same width of tape? scotch type tape. Take a look at your picture I'm going to post up with some markings on it, that is the limit of 2 perpendicular edges I see that could be the edge of tape. Notice that only the highest parts have that black stuff on it. The high spots are the only places that the tape can contact the coin, there and on the open flat area of the field too. I think that something reacted with the tape to cause this. At the bottom of the coin on Lincoln's bust is more, I think that another piece of tape was applied there over top ot the first tape piece. (Notice how there too is a blank space where the tape residue could not touch.

Acetone if it is still safe? That will remove the residue if it is tape. It is Bison by original name.

Try that the photos are more focus and precise what you look for.
Buffalo and bison has nothing to do with your coin.
your photos are to glare and out of focus. try with filtered photos hope will work better. I presume seen something but it is not clear yet.

It's a post-strike issue, not a mint error. Looks to have acquired a stain in some form. Acetone--100%--might remove or reduce it. The coin didn't exit the striking chamber in this condition.

Thank you all for your responses, I will check the tape idea and will retake pictures for the not focused comment. Thanks again

Besides the buffalo/bison nonsense, it looks like a dog to me. Post mint damage.

It shouldn't really matter exactly what it is, the fact that it could not happen during the striking of the coin indicates that is damage of some sort.

Coincident stain I'm guessing. Leaning toward a razorback hog. to the CCF!

I don't know. It seems to have a truck. Did you do the acetone?

Oh , I just reed. State the coin was tape Quote: the tape covers the whole penny. Now it is clear thing. The tape is composed by elements which will be harmful to the surface. In this case acetone could help for a small period of time, but your coin sorry to say it is damage permanently.
