I was in the USMC in 1979. I was in L.A. at a gun and knife show with some fellow Marines. I didn't have much money to spend so I was going through a dollar pile of Junk! well my mother collected brass fore years and I knew the color of dingy brass--greenish brown tarnish looking..WELL I came across a round thin coin like object and I was wondering what it may be..I could see the tarnish and so I tapped it on the counter..keep in mind it was completely covered in dirt and grim that filled the complete design full. It was not readable at all..I continued to tap it on the counter and the letters KKK appeared. I purchased it. I finally got it to my moms brass collection and she cleaned it up to find this...I know now we should have never cleaned it up..but we did..I apologize now if it offends anyone for that is the last thing I would want. This is just very interesting..

That's very interesting. Somehow the legend "MEMBER in good standing" has a nice ring...in terms of an ultimate membership.

On a related note, I once met a guy back in college wearing a medallion he got in then-apartheid S.Africa on a trip.
It was a design composed of 3 sevens (7) joined at their bases. I think you can visualize what that looks like, but he had no clue as to the significance.

Yes, I saw the "M"...it was my just my (attempt) at a joke. I have never seen one before.
I also cannot help but note the irony of that tag, with the stampings and shape that resembles a "slave tag" from years ago.

wow.. learn something new every day.. I never knew the KKK had so many medals/tokens/etc.. google "kkk medal" and TONS of pages come up for reference! They appear to be quite collectible due to their historical significance.. but looks like there are some fakes out there, as well. Haven't found your specific one yet, but am still looking

Some chapters of this organization had their own medals made. If this one came from one of the smaller groups it is possible that it will not be or has not ben listed yet. I printed the pic and will take it to work with me to have some of the active members I work with tell me more about it for you if they can.

- I think you'll find that this is the symbol of a political party in South Africa:
"The South African white supremacist paramilitary group, the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB), have used a flag consisting of a red background with a white circle. In the circle, three black sevens form a design distantly reminiscent of the triskelion. In spite of the similarities to the swastika (and the overall resemblance to the Nazi flag, both having a black symbol on a white disc on a red background), they claim their flag is inspired by a Biblical meaning of the seven, and the fact that the organisation was founded on the seventh day of the seventh month, 1973 (from which the three 7's can be extracted)."

Peter, right!
I told the guy the meaning--and that it's probably not a cool thing to wear.

This is a MODERN fantasy item, purported to be a genuine KKK - Ku Klux Klan membership medal and sold as such. The KKK did not make these, they were made to sell to collectors. They have been around for about 20 years or more. Collectors new to collecting KKK material often buy them thinking they are genuine. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but still reasonable for a $1 purchase!

I had a pretty strong feeling in that direction but had no real evidence. This is similar to another item with a "dark history"- slave tags. Slave tags only come from two places- Charleston SC and a suburb of Charleston, yet you will see crusty old pieces of metal at just about any fleamarket in the South purported to be a slave tag. Some are sold cheaply for a couple bucks but others really try to scam people for a few hundred because the genuine thing is worth thousands. http://historical.ha.com/common/vie...25267&src=pr
