Never seen a solid radar note see for such a high price. Number 88888888 always have a premium but this is way over board.

The Charleton catalog should update its values as they are too low for fancy numbers.

Look at the grade and there was special reasons for the bidding war

I'd say six times BV is definitely overboard (8's or any other #) but I have been trying to get the pricing panel to adjust their BV's for 1954 DF/modified solids, low #, ladders (& the like) for 4 years now. 1954 & earlier special # notes have been on fire for the past couple years (& were on the rise before the pandemic). [If I ever get a response its always the same: they'd rather see the trend for more than 1 year before publishing a new price]

I would be willing to bet that the winner is not Canadian (& the bidding war probably came from abroad). I tried to buy some 1935-1954 target notes in UNC back in 2014 & discovered that 80-90% of the sellers were US based asking Charlton or more in USD. Charlton is listed in CDN but everybody seemed to be impervious to that. This was like paying %30-%40 more than BV at the time & I just stopped looking since there was only BIN priced too high (IMO).

from a web search:
"Because Eight (Ba in Chinese) has the similar pronunciation with #21457; (Fa, meaning wealth or fortune), this number is very welcome among Chinese people. The popularity of 8 was obvious in relation to the Beijing Olympic Games which commenced at exactly eight o'clock eight minutes on the eighth day of the eighth month in 2008."

So I am curious where it went.

I understand the number 8 is considered a lucky number but previous solid eights never reached five figures. I look at solid 8's for many years and the highest I've seen is in the $3000-$4000 for equivalent high grade notes.

Colonial Acres itself estimated the value at $6000, so the note way exceeded expectations.

As for Charleton, their values are ridiculously low. For a 1954 Modified $100 solid digit radar the price is given as $1700. And they say add 25% premium for a 8888888 note. That mean a solid 8 is valued at only $2125?! The value should much higher than that.

A true auction is market value, the BV is way off on a lot really cool currency because a lot of catalague values has not been updated for years, there is a least one under bidder and what if you are trying to complete a set and you are missing this note, the 50 dollar solid eights rarely shows up

That whole auction was insane, and not just the banknotes.

$1,000 for a 1951 PL-65 25c?!

Perhaps a hot market?
It seems to be on just some items.
I also believe that some auction houses are doing exceptionally well due to a lack of confidence in the legitimacy of the item from other online sources. It is possible that some auction houses are especially active since bidders believe that items are vetted (if not TPG). I've seen some really circulated currency sell for pretty ridiculously high prices on Lynn Knight.
