I'll say EF-45 as well. Looks just like yours, IGE.

I'm at XF45 as well. I would give it a quick acetone bath or a quick roll over with an acetone soaked qtip. Looks to have some pvc to the right of LIBERTY and on the neck, around the date.

Interesting, looks MDS, but there is a lack of die clashing and die polishing. 1916 has several overpolished varieties including the 2 Feather and "No F" missing designer initial, on multiple dies/die pairs. Both of these caused from the removal of die clashes via overpolishing. Amazing this die pie made it even this far without the usual issues.

What does MDS stand for? I bought it for $3.50 at my LCS. I thought of doing a acetone soak but wasn't sure if I should or not. Does a buff have to have luster to qualify as AU?

Middle die state. It is an indication of how worn the dies were when this coin was struck.

That is one sharp looking strike. I would say EDS (Early die state) due to the sharpness of all the devices.

Thank you for the clarification on MDS. How did I do on the price? Its certainly nicer than the one I have in my buff set

Only read the original post. This should be about a $15 coin so at $3.50 you did really well.

Acetone won't do any harm as long as you let the chemical evaporate on its own and you don't wipe the coin. Maybe a dab with a non-abrasive cloth like the ones they sell at auto detailing supply shops. Nickels don't necessarily need to have luster at AU but it helps. Your coin has a sharp strike, but also has a light scratch that detracts a little. Nice coin overall.

Definitely a sharp strike, but that is not necessarily indicative of EDS. There is noticeable Die Deterioration on the back the the neck and jawline, also around the periphery of the Buffalo on the reverse where heavier metal flow lines can be seen.

Edit: At $3.50 it's a nice purchase

I'll go with XF45, maybe details graded because of the reverse scratch others have mentioned. Still an attractive coin and sounds like a pretty good deal...
