I can't find too much on this token/medal besides what's on numista... But I picked it up today for a good price. (Balcescu's eye is fine, it's just the light)
thanks @sap. Numista calls it a 'token' and its made me curious . . . I get why it isn't a coin; but is it a commemorative medal or token? What's the difference between medal and token?
Tokens usually had some use as currency either as a circulating coin or to be presented for some item (Like a free bar of soap, a coffee, a free service or a discount off something).
A medal is a metal disc that celebrates an achievement or any anniversary and has no monetary or in kind value.
Thanks @princetane, that was my understanding; I was thrown off by numista's use of 'token'. I have to imagine many of this particular medal was a low mintage with many melted down or destroyed over the years; Romania didn't have it easy in the immediate post-war years and certainly the Romanian economy pre-EU was . . .err. . . bumpy.
