I was pretty active with my collection up until I went to grad school in 1984. I just recently looked at my collection for the first time since then and was a little concerned about the condition of this coin. It was really the only coin I ever purchased from a dealer (BU grade for $8.50) back in the 80's. It has been in a cardboard/window holder that was in a PVC flip, so maybe some of the damage is PVC related. So my questions are: What could be causing the black specks on both sides? Does the brown spot under the nose effect grading? I know the general rule that you should not clean coins, but these marks were not present 40 years ago and the coin was never removed from the holder until recently. I am also not sure what is causing the diagonal streaks on the rev. They are on the coin and they are not scratches. Again this was not present before storage. Aside from the staining/crude, I am having a hard time judging the possible grade this coin could be using the PCGS photo guide. Some elements seem like they could rate >MS65 while other seem quite a bit lower. I am guessing this it probably due to it not being a very good strike, but I really do not have the experience to make that judgement. Thanks for your opinions.

That was a nice mint state coin back in the 80's . Unfortunately it succumbed to the holders it was in . I would agree to the PVC and where it was stored ; Basement , hot attic , lots of humidity ,etc . I don't think any remedy will take away all those spots and streaks but just for the heck of it give it an acetone soak , it will not harm the coin . Then put the coin in a new holder . Do not clean it in any way .

Looks like it was an MS-65FS coin, now it gets a "details" grade. Too bad about the environmental issues.

Thanks T-Bop for your opinion. I have done a quick acetone dip. (maybe 30 secs). I am tempted to do a longer soak since it cannot make things any worse. What bothers me is that I had the PVC flip stapled in the album with the rest of the set. None of the coins adjacent to the flip (and actually touching it) had issues. Just this coin in the cardboard holder. I have not heard of the folders causing issues, just PVC which was not in direct contact with the 50D. Oh well.

Welcome to the community! Shame what happened to this coin.... Not worth grading in this condition with it's current issues.

that was typical price for a decent 50D back then. I bought several around that time for that price. that holder really did a number on it. like stated you can try acetone to see if it helps at all. I dont think it would have got a FS designation as there are too many crossover marks on the steps. I also dont think thats spots will come off

Too bad about the spots...the acetone may lighten them...I've left coins on the windowsill for a few seasons to even up the surface toning...flip them once in a while...you've got nothing to lose.

Acetone is not working. Soapy water in a sonicator might have lighten the brown spot a little.
I am thinking mylar on the holder has some really small holes and acid from the PVC caused the spots. So it is probably not going to go away. That's why I experimented with a solicitor. Figured I cannot make things any worse...
