I think I have a good handle on Machine Doubling. What about the modern coins with indented words that look like doubling. Please see the attached photos and let me know what you think.

There will never be a DDR on that area. It is just Machine Doubling on that area. These devices are incuse. 70% of the time out of 100 coins I checked had slight to strong Machine Doubling on those incuse devices. The DDR's are on the centers of the design. Machine Doubling on raised devices reduce the size of the devices. Machine Doubling on incuse devices are reduced in size. (Just opposite of the raised devices) On the EPU on cents you can see these events as they are closer to the centers of the devices:

I know it sounds backwards, but as Coop shows DD on incised devices will make them smaller.
