So my sister, who works in a popular chain store says "Here is a coin for your collection, the automatic register rejected it." I am all excited expecting a Buffalo nickel, or who knows what. What do I get?- a 2007 Washington $1 coin. Nothing wrong with it, I tell my Sister it is $1 and she should keep it, she says "no one takes those things.' How sad.

The law says they are legal tender but never caught on such as usage in retail https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg...9publ145.pdf According to the legislation, the new series would seek to revitalize the design of United States coinage and return it to its position as an object of aesthetic beauty. The Act included measures to ensure an adequate supply of the coins are available for circulation. The Federal Reserve Banks would be required to have unmixed quantities of the coins available to financial institutions during an introductory period for each coin release. The Director of the United States Mint was required to increase public awareness of the new dollar coins through various activities and programs. These measures were to have helped build a following for the series with collectors, although ultimately the denomination had trouble gaining traction in circulation. A stockpile of coins would build up in Treasury vaults leading to the eventual decision to scale back production considerably. Mintage levels showed a general decline throughout the course of the series. For the first year of issue, nearly one billion coins were produced for circulation across four different designs and two mint facilities. As the coins failed to achieve widespread usage, mintage levels fell for subsequent years, although the coins continued to be issued through the channels of circulation. When a significant buildup of dollar coins in storage started to become an issue, the Secretary of the Treasury used his authority to curtail production further. From 2012 onwards, the coins were only struck in the minimum quantities necessary to meet demand from collectors.

The series launched in 2007 with coins honoring George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. The series concluded in 2016 with coins issued to honor Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Ronald Reagan. One final coin was added to the series in 2020 to honor George H.W. Bush. list: https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coin-a...-dollar-coin From 2007 to 2011, the coins were struck and released for general circulation. However, in late 2011 the Treasury Department made the decision to suspend production for circulation due to a surplus of $1 coins held in storage. From 2012 onward, Presidential dollars have been struck only in the amount necessary to meet demand from collectors. In addition to circulation strikes, the coins have also been struck in other finishes and included within various numismatic products offered by the United States Mint.

@Datadragon:
Searching out a proof dollar of George H.W. Bush - I cannot seem to find one anywhere - I was only able to find what might be a reverse proof in a '3-coin cornicles set'. Is this True? Or am I missing something?

Correct @Dearborn, no normal S proof. The George H.W. Bush Presidential dollars were not released for general circulation. Circulating quality coins packaged in bags, rolls, and boxes went on sale at the United States Mint on December 4, 2020. Product offerings included 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes from either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint facilities currently still available.

Other numismatic products were also offered featuring the coins. The Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set went on sale December 21, 2020. This product was limited to 10,000 units and featured an uncirculated version of the dollar coin (so its not the exact same quality as the rolls and bags) along with a bronze medal featuring Barbara Bush. The Coin and Chronicles Set went on sale September 17, 2021. This product was limited to 35,000 units and featured a reverse proof dollar coin, silver Presidential Medal, and bronze First Spouse Medal.

2020: Mint mark ("P", "D," or "S")

P+ D were 25 coin roll, 100 coin bag, 250 coin box. (Circulating Quality)
George H.W. and Barbara Bush 2020 Presidential $1 Coin (Uncirculated) & First Spouse Medal Set (P) 10,000.. This one is sold out at the mint but I'm sure you could find elsewhere.

Coin and Chronicles Set - George Herbert Walker Bush P + S 35,,000 mintage still available. The set includes a George H.W. Bush Presidential $1 Reverse Proof Coin and Silver Presidential Medal, postage stamp, Barbara Bush First Spouse Bronze Medal, and biographical booklet with colorful images. The Bush $1 Reverse Proof Coin and Silver Presidential Medal are only available in this set!

Thanks Data - I was already all over the mint site for the PD issues, but didn't find the 'cornicles set' so thanks for that link. it beats the 150 price on ebay.. The Reverse Proof will have to do to 'fill the hole' then.

@Dearborn, or the uncirculated in The Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set $25 might do if you can live without it being a proof. Otherwise back to 2x2s and 3 ring binders...

No one has refused to take an Eisenhower dollar coin from me as payment. People love them! Instead of more small dollars, perhaps enough new Ikes should be made to meet demand.

... awaiting Jbuck ... So they need to make 2, one for Nick10 and 1 for Jbuck

PS For you Presidential dollar collectors: You do know there are other coin & chronicles sets with reverse proofs and that these were actually quite low mintage? late in the summer of 2015, the Mint turned the numismatic world upside down by minting a new Presidential dollar coin with a staggeringly low mintage of only 17,000. Not only that, but these rare Presidential dollars were beautiful new Reverse Proofs which greatly enhanced their desirability for collectors.

These coins were released in what the Mint referred to as "Coin and Chronicles" sets. In addition to the Reverse Proof Dollar coin, these Coin and Chronicles sets also came with a commemorative silver medal and a collectable stamp. The first of these low-mintage Reverse Proofs was for the ever-popular President Truman https://www.PCGS.com/news/the-lowes...in-111-years

As much as I would love to see the Ike return to circulation, the "I hate heavy coins and prefer dollar bills" contingent would remain disinclined to use them.

What we really need it so eliminate the one dollar bill.

Get rid of that filthy rag and dollar coins would be everywhere!

As for the Coin and Chronicles sets, I have them all. Highly recommend! I also have a duplicate of the Ike set which is PCGS graded.
