I am so thankful for this forum. I had no idea what could have caused this issue, but thanks to searching here I found my answer :)

The entire reverse has everything affected to varying degrees. What I found interesting is that the flaws seem to show some layering or flow lines which are visible in the closeups.

Just posting these for reference should anyone else need yet another example of this.

Sure looks more like Die Deterioration. I would expect to see mortar set (flaking chrome plating of die) affecting the fields as well, not just the design elements and legend.

DDD makes sense. I had done homework but not enough homework.

Thanks nickelsguy! Do I change my subject line in original post, or do I leave it as perhaps a helpful mistake?

I think Die Deterioration as well, especially at the Morse code message around the rim/edge., but you can see some of it all over. They used those dies during the war until there was nothing left of them.

On 1944/1945 it could also be corrosion under the plating? Hard to tell from the photos.
