Hi,

Can any CC members advise on how to differentiate between Bombay and Calcutta mints for the 1876 1/4 Anna Queen Victoria? I assume it is size however no size is listed for Bombay.

Thanks

NOTE: Different mintmarks
(small dot/diamond) = Mumbai
(no mintmark) = Calcutta

I assume you are aware Bombay and Mumbai are the same place.

Yes, and it was not known as Mumbai in Queen Victoria's British India. The information on the mint marks you quoted is for the Republic of India (post 1950) coins, a wee bit after Queen Victoria I'm afraid.

Try this then:

Bombay mint has 2 leaves below date

Calcutta mint only has 1 leaf below date

@Ozleigh - my apologies, I was referring to the diamond although I just discovered that later coins (1900s) had a diamond as well. I stand corrected. Unfortunately, I can find no mention of a mint mark (circle or diamond) for the 1876 specimen.
