Hi all,

I have an 1835 East India Company 1/4 Anna which is 26.0mm diameter. It is a tad less than 26.2mm indicating Calcutta mint however I also have some Bombay and Madras coins which are in the ball park for diameter so am inclined to say this is a Calcutta minted coin. Problem is, the obverse is the large variety which according to Kraus does not exist. Is Kraus in error? Help appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know your specific coin, but I have had experience with Krause.
Krause does contain errors, so in some cases, it cannot be relied upon.

@Albert - yes you are correct. I would just like to get some confirmation re this coin from other users before suggesting a modification to the Numista catalogue. :-)

There are a ton of varieties of these where things like, berry number, ribbon end, position of Y, ribbon loops etc all can come into play - depending on how exact you want to be. This particular example is probably too worn to get into the detail of everything though.

Diameter suggests Madras.

@Bacchus - woah! Which reference is that from? If correct it means an error in Krause and thus Numista. Thanks

Krause (and presumably Numista) got their information from Pridmore which was published in 1980

The other reference is Stevens and Weir which was published in 2012 and may reflect updated knowledge - I know know for sure.

Both books are essential for anyone collecting this series and are not expensive. Stevens has also published a companion book called "The coins of the English East India Company Presidency series" which is an outstanding book.

Thanks Bacchus although I suspect you have a lot more dosh than I do as the cheapest I could find "Coins of the British Commonwealth of Nations India 4,2" was $290AU + shipping and The Uniform coinage of India at is a tad cheaper at $130AU (including shipping). They do look good references but will keep my eye out on ebay to see if they turn up at a price that, to me at any rate, is not expensive.

PS How long ago did you get these? I wonder if they have skyrocketed in price of the last decade.

Oh wow, things have got more expensive, My Pridmore was about £25 off ebay, but that was probably 20 years ago. The Stevens book was around £40 I think, off Amazon, when it was just published. The other reference was a similar amount. I'd check on Albris or Bookfinder too, sometimes you can get lucky there.
