I thought I would start a new thread here separate from this one, which spurred the idea.

It seems to me, based on my observations on search cent rolls, that the economics of roll searching have declined sharply in recent years.

Older rolls have been getting harder to find and the prices have been rising sharply. The costs of getting coins graded has also been going up.

At the same time, while some coins have been going up in value, coins that are not highest graded have not done so well.

Ten odd years ago, if you tried to auction an MS65 cent from the 1970s or 1980s you would expect a few buyers to show up and prices to be well above the cost of grading. Since then, I think the populations of these coins have increased sharply and the populations of MS66 coins have gone up exponentially. Now I fend that it is hard to sell a post-1980 MS65 coin at all. And MS64? Barely worth the effort of trying to sell it.

I am coming to the conclusion that there is little reason to buy fresh rolls at current prices.

I agree with you in principle, but I still buy them, I still buy mint bags, and I still get nickel dollars from dealers in bulk. In the end, this is a hobby for me, and even with bad roll economics, it is still way cheaper than my other hobby (motorcycles).

I do it for the thrill of the hunt and to continually strive to upgrade my registry sets. You never know when a MS-67 will pop out.

As some followed lot #772 at a Colonial Acres a 2006P Roll just sold for $625 with all the juice.
I went to an exhibition last week end as a coin seller and I had a great penny display there. Full fresh boxes and a roll display. Its been 10 years now since they were gone, As people with children walked by my table the parents had to show them what pennies look like. I'm not sure how much the up coming generation is going to care about our passion's.
Even myself with rolls that I paid face [50cts] per roll or 1ct face per coin, with all the other expenses there isn't much meat left on the bone. Just think of how many middle men there are to find, and finally sell a Certified coin in auction and the malty trail of Government taxes are the worst.

When it was deemed that the cent would be withdrawn in 2012, I began buying all the circulated cents I could from banks, bags, boxes whatever I could get my hands on and I mean a lot. I, like my dad before me, am a face value collector and have only recently finished going through all those cents. I have kept rolls of date sorted 40s 50s 60s, clips, blanks, varieties. I never thought about the economics , I did it for the thrill of the hunt and the love of collecting. I now have my fathers collection. I do buy coins that I see at shows that I find appealing and have bought several collections from others. I have sold very few coins, my daughter with reap the benefits of my madness, lol.

Agreed on the thrill of the hunt. The reason I search rolls is to try to find the ultra grades and it is a wonderful feeling to pull one out that you know is a real keeper.

But if you are buying rolls at 25 to 50 times face, and doing it in quantities, the economics do matter. When you get to the stage of the rolls in the other thread (10 rolls of 1990 cents at the Colonial Acres price of $70/roll) the economics do matter. Non one wants to spend $700 on rolls and end up with $5 of cents to take back to the bank!

I agree with you, on the other post with the 1990 unopened/unsearched rolls, 50-70$ for a roll of cents is not my thing because of cost , even though I am aware of the lower mintage of 1990 cents. Agreed, no one wants to buy 700$ worth of rolls for a 5$ dump at the bank, this is why I stick more to face value stuff as the financial risk is less but I probably won't find the high grade coins you seek.

denny7000 - I did exactly what you did and sorted all the varieties and cooper. I even sorted the USA pennies and ended up with 4 x gallon jars yet to be fully searched. Educate your self on these and get into the science of what to look for. There is big bucks there if you get lucky.
