Hello
I have this coin it seems it has been probably cleaned with some chemical, do you think it is worth it to submit it for conservation or is the damage permanent? The cartwheel lustre is not apparent anymore, on some parts the luster could be seen under the stain cover .

chronos, once the surface layers have been stripped away with chemicals, they cannot be restored. The damage is permanent, and no conservation could restore this coin to its initial state.

Also...check into the actual price of conservation...

A soak in pure acetone may remove some of the gunk from the areas around the details and acetone cannot chemically interact with the metal. So it is safe.

I wish I had kept the reference, but on one coin forum a guy said he was a former conservationist for one of the grading companies. He said they use warmed up acetone. But take that as anecdotal.

However, I have used acetone on hundreds of coins with pleasing results.
