I'm getting somewhere between VF-35 and XF-40 and I have no idea how to tell from the picture if it was cleaned or not so along with the grading if someone could explain how I can spot a coin was cleaned by just looking at the picture, I would appreciate it.

I think it would get a Details grade anyway, due to the rim damage and reverse scratch, perhaps XF.

i'd call it XF those hits on the reverse are going to detail the coin

as for telling if a coin is cleaned there are so many different ways a coin can be cleaned from lightly cleaned to harshly cleaned and everything in between. they could be lightly dipped and grade straight or over dipped and detail. grading by photo is not a science and a challenge at best if the seller is intending to make the coin look better than it actually is. higher grade circulated coins are going to show signs of original surfaces in most cases. you can look for haloing around the devices which can help if you dont see physical scratches

heres an XF45 with its original skin to compare but its not foolproof. if you truly want to be able to tell the difference go to ebay and start looking at indian heads that have been designated cleaned to see what they look like. it can take years to get good at it and a trained eye

I'm sure I have bought an IHC or two from that seller. They have honest photos but use a little too much light. I think the color of the coin will look better in-hand. It does not look cleaned to me.

Add me to the chorus of EF details. Still a decent coin. Doesn't look cleaned, just has some issues on the reverse.
