Good day everyone... While looking at this 2021 Quarter, I noticed the lettering of "Crossing the Delaware" looked rather fat compared to other quarters. When looking under the scope it seems to me to be a slight bit of doubling. What is the groups opinion? Thanks

So, after 80 reviews with no comments, I must assume that what I thought might be slight doubling is not.

I wouldn't assume those 80 views are people. Lots of web crawlers and bots will "read" every post on a public forum, often multiple times per day.

Sorry for the delay. And yes, lots of folks are just browsing here (I have one post here that has well over 3000 views but only 200 replies. ). happens to all of us. Some folks look and don't know how to respond so they watch and learn. Anyway, onto your coin! To me it appears to be Machine Doubling. I should hope that others will stop by and comment. (it is the weekend now, so it may take time..)

Thanks to all. And thanks for the insight into the functionality of the forum. I'm a bit intimidated by the whole process. I think for now, I will not post as much as I read and learn more from what other's post.

Don't be intimidated and don't feel like any question is dumb. There are lots of smart and experienced people on this site just eager to teach and help others. I continue to learn all the time.

Quote: I think for now, I will not post as much as I read and learn more from what other's post. Well, don't do that! We welcome you to comment on any post you happen to read if you want - even if is to say hi or to somebody newer to you. I try to comment on every post I read (about 40 or 50 each day) But I don't comment on some at first, only because I don't know the answer yet. Instead, I'll go try and research what the poster is asking then come back and post.

"Cointree" asked me to post a quarter without any doubling so a comparison can be done. Please see the attached two pictures taken as close to the same angle/position as possible. I placed arrows on what I think is doubling. But is it mechanical or die doubling...that is the question?

Interesting example. I don't think it is a DDR however despite the split doubling. Looks a little shelf like as you would expect from Machine Doubling along with a combination of die wear giving the appearance of splitting. I'm no expert by any means with this so I defer to coop and others for their expert opinions.

@A1agrl MisterT's assessment seems to make sense. I would have the same questions as you about this one. Did you try lighting from different angles to see if the appearance of splitting/doubling changes or disappears? Just a suggestion. I'm still trying to figure things out for myself. Good luck. I hope it is something good.

@A1agri thanks for posting the comparison. I am going to agree with Mr T that this looks like MD combined with some DDD. For instance the S's on CROSSING look doubled, but if you imagine the second S not there, you would see a much skinnier version of the S's than normal. That appears to be MD or possibly just glare. The I, on the other hand, looks like DDD, as it appears almost as a shadow of the I, and also you can see a less distinct version of the same thing on the other coin.

Thanks for your comments. What I seem to have is an enigma, with some reviewers seeing MD, and others seeing a little bit of both, MD and DDD. I think this is a keeper to my collection. javascript:insertsmilie(' ')
