That reminds me of the movie Excalibur, when the ghost of Merlin says, "A dream to some. A nightmare to others!"

I assume there are a few members of this forum who might cheerfully set up camp in that basement with a Grubhub app, a few cases of beer, and a carload of numismatic equipment. Then triumphantly emerge some time in August with a handful of prize wheat cents.

Seems to be an appropriate summary.

I get the feeling that these are mainly Lincoln Memorial cents.

When the nation switched from copper to zinc to press its pennies, Fritz saw an opportunity to help build generational wealth for his family.
Fritz, a well-known butcher who worked in Hollywood for years, would take his paychecks to the bank and purchase copper pennies, knowing their value would only go up in time.

The home was built in the early 1900s...Fritz and his brother, both German immigrants, lived in the home for decades until Fritz passed and his brother moved away.

Hmm, while most cents are of course not valuable beyond the copper content adding to their resale value, the possibility of newly stored away change from 1909 to the 60s to look through put away before decaying in circulation from those who know what to look for would definately be a dream to some...

I'll split looking with John1 and Makecents

Yeesh... surprised they haven't tried to contact a local coin dealer (as least it doesn't appear they even thought of that from the article)... or just offer them up on eBay by the bag or something.

I agree. If the composition change wast the motivating factor, wheat cents were far less common by then. There will be some in there, likely at a higher rate than roll hunters have today.

That $100 grand could have been invested much more prudently.

Their approach seems silly. You don't load them in the truck first, then start driving to banks. You figure out the bank or Brinks or whatever first, and then you load them and drive them.

Would the U.S. government even let them cross the Canadian border with 5 tons of pre-1982 copper? They already passed a law to prevent melting circulating pennies for scrap, and I rather imagine that law had an anti-export provision, too.

Yes, in San Bernardino county.

The law prohibits the exportation, melting, or treatment of 5-cent and one-cent coins minted and issued by the United States. https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...e-cent-coins
Looks like you could do $100 at a time shipping or $25 in person, boy that would take awhile....

The exportation in any one shipment of 5-cent coins and one-cent coins having an aggregate face value of not more than $100 that are to be legitimately used as money or for numismatic purposes. Nothing in this paragraph shall be construed to authorize export for the purpose of sale or resale of coins for melting or treatment by any person. https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/31/82.2

Dang, I wished I lived closer. I would've bought all of them from that family, put them on a pickup truck, cart them all back, and put them in my lair, I mean basement. Bah, missed opportunity!
