A nice write up by PCGS in their collector profile on him and his collections. https://www.PCGS.com/news/collector...t-winestevenI get to keep up with him through Charmy "the Pennylady" Harker's regular coin show blogs/reports, and here on CCF through his wonderful posts sharing his collections. Though we've never met in person I must say that he seems like a super down to earth guy and a connoisseur of a collector with one heck of a good eye when it comes to picking out coins with great eye appeal and quality. Very nice article. Please to have you here with us Steve. Curious - the article mentions that you have 3 members of your classic commemorative set you wish to upgrade, but have not yet found suitable examples. Would you care to tell us which coins they are? As a fellow commemorative enthusiast I'm interested in your perspective. Edit to add: My 50-coin MS type set is way down the PCGS list at #32, but like yours is 100% CAC approved. I also have a complete PCGS certified circulated silver commemorative type set.

Thank you @westcoin for starting this thread, and for separately messaging me a few minutes ago to let me know about this post. Each evening I typically only read posts in two areas - U.S. Commemorative Forum and Classic U.S. Coin Forum. I never knew until now there was a Coin Community Family Stuff category, and Coin Community Family Topics. Even now I can't find either on the home page. I only got here due to a hotlink from @westcoin. Thanks to all of you for your very kind words and wishes. Regarding my Classic Commem Type Set, I've been searching for several years to upgrade my Albany, Gettysburg, Long Island, and Lynchburg coins. For the past three years or so I've literally seen hundreds of each of those in the grades I want and with CAC stickers. However, so far I have not seen any with the eye appeal that would convince me to replace my current coin that is graded lower. I upgrade many coins in my sets, up to the grades that I am comfortable with financially. But I learned many years ago from Legend that one should not upgrade a coin whose eye appeal you really like with a coin in a higher grade, unless that higher grade coin will look nicer in your set than the coin it replaces! Here's a hotlink to that set: https://www.PCGS.com/setregistry/co...edset/189058Steve

I agree 100%, Steve! I've been in the process of upgrading my complete set of classic commemoratives for a while now, and progress is slow precisely because of that. Oftentimes examples are fairly easy to find in the grade I'm looking for but not with the overall eye appeal I want. And when I do find one that checks all the boxes, that great eye appeal usually costs a premium, sometimes significant, over a typical example.

As we know with many things in life, one has to pay for quality.
Coins with high eye appeal attract more buyers, and the demand for those coins over "common" ones is higher, hence the higher prices. With that said, it's reasonable to somewhat expect then, when those coins get sold, hopefully they will continue to have higher demand. However, no guarantee.
