commems CCF Master Historian of USA Commemoratives United States 12251 Posts	Posted 07/26/2023 2:57 pm From time to time, a question is asked about which classic era commemorative coins should be included in a US Civil War - Themed collection? I would offer that the core of such a collection would need to include the 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial, the 1936 Battle of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary and the 1937 Battle of Antietam 75th Anniversary half dollars. I would also include, however, the 1918 Illinois Statehood half dollar (portrait of Abraham Lincoln) and the 1922 Ulysses S. Grant Birth Centenary half dollar. I've previously posted multiple times about each of them - they can be found using the following links: - 1918 Illinois Statehood Centennial - Abraham Lincoln - 1922 Ulysses S. All Pre 1955 ? Just the 1930's? 1892 to the 1930's? I collected The Commemoratives as I Thought the Designs and Artwork were Irresistible, To Me, There are Many Classics................ The series can be broken into three distinct eras IMO; pre-depression, commemorative craze and post-craze. Each era has some distinctive qualities that drive today's collecting availability. I expand the era to 1875 through 1969, choosing to include years that saw unsuccessful commemorative coin bills introduced in Congress while silver half dollars (even if just in clad form) still circulated. I see the modern era as starting in 1970, when the transition to circulating copper-nickel clad coins was complete. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.
