From time to time, a question is asked about which classic era commemorative coins should be included in a US Civil War - Themed collection? I would offer that the core of such a collection would need to include the 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial, the 1936 Battle of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary and the 1937 Battle of Antietam 75th Anniversary half dollars. I would also include, however, the 1918 Illinois Statehood half dollar (portrait of Abraham Lincoln) and the 1922 Ulysses S. Grant Birth Centenary half dollar.

I've previously posted multiple times about each of them - they can be found using the following links:

- 1918 Illinois Statehood Centennial - Abraham Lincoln
- 1922 Ulysses S. Grant Birth Centenary
- 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial
- 1936 Battle of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary
- 1937 Battle of Antietam 75th Anniversary

In addition to the Civil War - themed coins that were issued, there were a number that were proposed but that did not get authorized/approved:

- What If? 1934 Stonewall Jackson Birthplace Memorial
- What If? 1935 General Robert E. Lee
- What If? 1935 Jefferson Davis
- What If? 1938 Battle of Chickamauga
- What If? 1963 Gettysburg Address Half Dollar

My thanks go out to Bobby who engineered a new tool for me that made such lists far easier to create. I'll definitely be using the tool in the future!

I don't think there is any debate that the classic commemorative span the years 1892 (Columbian half) through 1954 (final Carver-Washington half).

The series can be broken into three distinct eras IMO; pre-depression, commemorative craze and post-craze. Each era has some distinctive qualities that drive today's collecting availability.

Lot's more discussion on the topic can be read in commems epic 'Days of' thread:

@Morgans_dad: Traditionally, the classic era is considered to be 1892-1954 - the first and last years of coin issues.

I expand the era to 1875 through 1969, choosing to include years that saw unsuccessful commemorative coin bills introduced in Congress while silver half dollars (even if just in clad form) still circulated.

I see the modern era as starting in 1970, when the transition to circulating copper-nickel clad coins was complete.
