I found this in a box today in my 97 yr old grandma's closet. The E and R are raised so I am pretty sure that means it was struck after the brockage and not the result of a vice. Looked at it under a 40x microscope and it looks legit. Problem is that star. Could be a Barber quarter?

@1919, first welcome to CCF. It is interesting that the obv rim is intact. I'm interested to see whether there is evidence of flattening on the rev.

Here is he reverse. Thank you for all the replies. Either way this was a fun learning experience as I did't find too much else in the pail.

The "STATES" is convex or pointing towards you slightly. Instead of a vice could it be a sledgehammer?

Could have been a hammer. The left side of the reverse is flat.
