I've been wondering...

since the pound has a new reverse design every year, with the Union, then England, then Wales, Scotland, and N Ireland, what's the design for this year? Is it again going to be a dragon (or leek or reused design) or is Matt Dent going to make a new one?

By the way, have our friends in the UK seen any new 2009 coins yet? So far I've only seen the Harrison Dollar and the 09 Sac, but those were especially ordered.

No, I have not seen any new 2009 coins.

My understanding is that 2009 1 pence to the 1 pound is going to be the Royal Shield design again.

A second 50 pence for Kew Gardens since it is 250 years old.

A Robert Burns and Charles Darwin two pound coins along with the standard reverse two pound coin.

Then there is always the non-circulating five pound coin and this year it is of Henry the VIII.

Yes, Kena is right. The £1 design remains unchanged for 2009, and no I haven't seen any.

The £1 was not originally to be included in the 2008 overhaul, but it made sense to once the designs for the other coins were decided upon, so young Mr Dent got a bonus coin to his name.

And about the 5 Pound Crown, I heard that you can get one at face at the Post Office. Is this true, and does it come in any kind of packaging or is it just raw?

I used to buy the £5 coins at the post office, it took me a while to figure it out, I live abroad, came back and went to the post office, which had managed to lease half the shop to some mini mart sort of shop selling crisps and what not.
Best bet is to go to The Royal Mint website, order a £5 pound for £5 and they will send it free of charge.
Not sure when the £5 actually comes out for "circulation" so to speak, when you can get them for £5 but it is usually much later in the year.

And yes, the £1 is the same as last year, oh joy! Almost as bad as when they did not release £1 in 1998 and 1999!! So I guess we are stuck with the same pound coin for 5 years then! Or maybe forever!

I have bought raw £5 coins at the post office in the past, but not recently. I think they stopped selling them.

You see them on ebay for £5 plus postage, which is daft if you live in the UK. As augsbuger says, postage is free from the mint, and they still only cost £5. They are raw though. The ones with the cardboard packaging cost more.

Ahh... seems like we stole the direct ship idea off the Brits (like the forever stamp)

Are there people who actually use 5 Pound coins? And if you offer it to the store, will they keep recirculating it?

One last question... do you guys have a "£" symbol directly on your keyboard? You guys type the £ symbol so easily!

Haha, yeah £££££££ I have a british laptop!! Also a €€€€ sign too, oh it feels so GOOOD!
Yes, people do actually use them, I worked in the little chef many years ago in the holidays and I took all of them, except someone decided they wanted the diana one that we got. Though I only ever saw about 3 £5 coins there, and I have seen a few in tills around the country but rarely and they don't offer them, I think they just bank them!

Very very rare that they would be used but they are legal tender. They definitely come under the NCLT category.

I try to buy a raw one from the mint each year but sometimes I forgot to look and miss when they are on sale for £5 with free shipping.

Have not seen the post office offering them for a while.

My keyboard must be too old for a euro symbol. Where is it located, and what is missing?

€€€€€€€€

That seems to work. Shift 4 is the dollar sign $$$$$$$

So have the newer keyboards moved the dollar sign? Or is it gone?
