Coin Id-Byzantine Era, Italy, Date? Purchased In Greece (Id: 13th C Venetian Grosso Of Ranieri Zeno)

Cinnamon80 New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 04/26/2024 09:55 am Hello, Help please! On vacation in Greece I purchased a coin pendant set in 22K gold. Overpaid, but that was assumed at time of purchase. It was impulsive. It does appear to be a real coin (but not valuable). The certificate of authentication says it is a Byzantine coin from 530-610. From my internet searches, I am finding information based on my layman's ID that the coin is Venetian Grosso of Doge Ranieri Zeno (ruled 1253-1268) based on the vertical markings (DVX) between the Doge Zeno and St. Mark. I am wanting to know so when I speak of the pendant when wearing, I know what I am talking about. Thank you for any help. Report this Post to the Staff

Third, I agree with your attribution 100%--well done doing this just through interwebs searching! The obv legend is RA GENO SM VENETI DVX, which does correspond to Doge Ranieri Zeno (1253-1268 AD). The denomination is a Grosso and the attribution is Biaggi #2775. I appreciate you also commenting that it is a "great piece of history" to pick up on a vacation. I know nothing about coins or the jewelry shop I purchased it from in Greece. I wanted a nice, expensive keepsake. I grossly overpaid according to what I see the loose coins selling for on the internet. It is stamped 22K on the pendant bezel. Gold is high currently, so I a telling myself the "gold and craftsmanship" boosted the price. I am hoping that I paid only double what it is worth. Add on 20% too for "the memory". Maybe I will get close to what I paid. I am of Italian descent and was extremely happy to discover this was a Venetian coin. I am also a Christian so appreciate the religious factor as well. Made the coin more special to me. I appreciate your time and help. It is a fantastic keepsake that will be passed to my daughters. 1253-1268 Neat! Report this Post to the Staff

You have a nice travel memory, and a SUPER window into medieval history with that coin. Venice (along with Genoa, Florence and Papal Rome) was a major Mediterranean power when that coin was struck, and exercised a form of republican government that was unusual for its time.
