Hello - I am new to all of this and not interested in being a collector, but have inherited a box of coins that my mother and grandmother saved. I don't want to dishonor them by not doing the right thing with them and accidentally melting them down for silver content. Would love some help - all the coins except maybe 1 or 2 have been circulated and are ungraded. I am in the process of compiling a list. here are the two 1928 Peace dollars...
All help appreciated.

Need better pictures. One at a time please. Large clear photos of the dates and properly oriented up. Not saying that this is the case here but altered date from 1923 coins do exist.

Definitely need better pix to properly grade those 1928-S dollars, but they are worth a bit above melt:

Well they are the 28-S varieties so not the big buck 28-P.

In circulated, the 1928-S really isn't worth much. You have a small premium as it's a 1928, but it's readily available.

to the CCF

If these were Philadelphia mint 1928 coins they would be worth a premium. However they were minted in San Francisco so essentially are worth a slight premium over silver melt value.

U.S. Silver dollars that are melted are usually heavily damaged coins that have been holed or have major problems. The coins you pictured are definitely not candidates for melting. Their value exceeds their melt value by a significant margin.

Whatever you do do not attempt to clean, polish or shine those coins in any way. I estimate the retail value on the two pieces he posted at $30 each. Good luck with the collection and welcome to CCF. We'd be happy to try to answer any further questions you may have.
