Hello, I was wondering if someone can educate me on the color and odd edge of this penny. I am trying to learn a little about the coin collection that I just inherited and have many coins to go through. There are coins from the 1800s to early 1900s but this one really stood out in the pennies box of the collection because of the color being really bright like bronzish. Thank you for any information.

Well it has been plated and it is still in a bezel like for a key chain or piece of jewelry.

likely highly polished (cleaned) and encased in a bezel (now broken) to be used as a keyring or other piece of jewelry.

Thank you for the information, since someone has modified this coin for jewelry or a keychain, can I assume this coin is now scrap metal or is there any reason to keep it in the penny box of the collection?

Tough call - the cent is damaged so leave it as is or take it out of the bezel and put it in a 2x2 as a "plated cent".

@0311hammer - Appears to have been used for jewelry of some kind.
