Curious to hear thoughts on the grade of this 1913 Wheat cent.

Tried to capture the surfaces as they look in hand but it's a difficult task. Is it possible this is a proof? It is labeled as such in the collection.

Might be some mild environment damage on the obverse.

There was just a 1910 on tonight that had rounder rims to show it was not a proof. The rims on yours is what proof rims look like. You would have to look up if there are any markers to be absolutely certain but I'm thinking this is indeed a matte proof cent.

EDIT: From the pictures I can only guesstimate a PF65

This is a nice coin! That said, I see a bit of wear on the Portrait, and some rim damage at 9 0'clock on the Reverse. It may indeed be a Proof, but it's an Impaired example.

If it is indeed an impaired proof it's worth a pretty penny.

It appears to be a high AU impaired Matte proof. It should straight grade from what can be seen.

The early proofs are very rare and the early strikes during 1909-1915 were quite good. I will default to business strike without any known die markers.

Thanks all for the comments.

BadThad, I do think there's a distinctive C shaped scratch near the I in "IN" on the obverse that is consistent with a matte proof. But I admit I'm learning as I go here.

I agree with BadThad's comments. It does need to be authenticated. There are spots on the rims that don't look squared off, particularly on the reverse from about 10:00 to 3:00 looks rounded. Same thing on the obverse from around 12:00 to 3:00.

I hope it is a matte proof but it could just be a very, very nice business strike.

Yes, that makes sense. I am working on sending this one in for validation.

Will be interesting to see how it turns out! I will post an update when I know.

One more interesting thing (at least to me), after reading these comments I went back to the old storage box where I pulled these pennies from a few years ago and I was able to find the old hand written notes from this coin (notes dated in 1946 by the way!). Anyway, it turns out that this had been labeled as a proof. Of course, that just means that our great grandfather thought it was at the time, and it still needs validation. but it's interesting to read these 80 year old notes on the same question we're discussing today.
