https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subs...B0755HY747X6It's not every day that you see a complete gold proof set! This set, dated 1877, features many remarkable coins. Each coin has a mintage of 20 pieces, of which, many have been lost or heavily circulated over time. Why was the mintage so low? The mint produced enough coins to satisfy orders from the public. The cost of an 1877 gold proof set was about one month's wages in that time period! Highlighting a few notable coins from this set: The $5 Gold piece is the sole finest example recognized between CAC stickering and grading with a grade of PR64+DCAM. The $10 gold piece is one of two 1877 $10 proofs with CAC approval. The $20 piece is one of three CAC-recognized examples and is tied for the finest known, which also resides in a CACG holder. Each of these pieces has deep watery mirrors with the famous orange-peel texture found on proof vintage gold. A dark orange frost enhances the devices of the $20 piece, which only serves to accentuate the deep cameo contrast. Needless to say, this set is nothing short of being considered "museum quality." 1877 G$1 CAC PR65CAM 1877 $2.50 CAC PR64+CAM 1877 $3 CAC PR65CAM 1877 $5 CAC PR64+DCAM 1877 $10 CAC PR64CAM 1877 $20 CAC PR64+DCAM

Quote: Why was the mintage so low? When they first started selling proof coins to the public in 1858 collectors could order sets or individual coins. But in the 1870's, for awhile, they changed and collectors had to order the full proof set from one cent through double eagle. Cost was $43 and that was way too much for most collectors and the mintages plunged. Only a few rich and well connected collectors could buy sets. A few years later they again started allowing individual coin purchases or partial sets (minor coins, silver coins, or gold coin sets. If you bought the silverset your also received the minor set as well.).
