I don't see how the obverse is struck normal, but the reverse shows that of a dime reverse but in really crappy condition. I also see a seam all the way around the edge on the reverse - so I cry foul here.

It looks like it was once a Magician's coin, but the dime that was epoxied into the cent's hollowed-out reverse has fallen out.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I think the dime was "pressed" on hollowed out reverse. Note the reverse image.

Pounded the dime "slice" a bit too much to seat it in the hollowed out cent reverse.

Yep, an ex-magicians coin where the dime fell out.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

I think that Hondo in on the correct path here. Quote: I think the dime was "pressed" on hollowed out reverse. Note the reverse image. but the image is not reverse on the 'coin' above. The olive and oak branches are on the correct sides, and you can clearly read "Unite States of America" especially the 'ATES OF AMERICA' part.

It wouldn't surprise me if the person that did this removed a clad layer (both?) on a dime before inserting it into the "pocket" to keep the coin copper. That could explain the very weak details.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

I think Pete has the right idea. I bet someone split the cupronickel layer off a a campfire coin and hammered the result into the front half of a magician's cent.

Quote: could be, have anyone ever tried to remove the cladding before? Yeah - I'd be more interested in watching how that is done then how this dime was made.!
