I receieved my order of 2009 Proof sets, and I'm sending them back - the nickels in the set are dirty on the reverse and one of them is scratched! Anyone else have this experience?

EOL, Welcome to the Family, I, like most have seen some of the products the U S Mint offers, decline in many ways. One of which is the "Quality" of their products, like the Proof sets you have mentioned. I would think that as a group, we could write to the Director of the U S Mint: Mr Edward Moy, and express our concerns that the quality vs quantity issue needs addressing along with some other areas of dis-content, the way in which the on-line/phone ordering is handled, simply needs attention to make the actual ordering process a more efficient, and "people friendly"system in which things are sped up to meet the obvious demand for the products they offer.I am sorry you waited, only to be disappointed over what you have received. I do know you are far from the first to of had this experience and I also wish you the best when you return the set and hope they are still available when you do, Good Luck, Enjoy the knowledge here, and the very friendly family you have joined, Be Well, Mike....... PS: I am sure other's will be along shortly to share some of their own experiences!!!

I didn't order the 2009 set yet(which I plan on doing)but when I ordered my 2007 proof set, the nickel that I received had some sort of smudge on it. It was like a white powder that was halfway on the set holder, and halfway on the coin. I didn't think much of it, and I didn't return it, but I should have.

Welcome to the Forum !
Although I am a little biased, I will buy mine from the shop that I work at. The cost is $5 over Mint cost, so with shipping it is about the same- the advantage being I can look at a few if there are any inferior sets. It may cost a few bucks more in the long run if you buy several, but choosing the sets and supporting a local business is in both your best interests ! Sorry if you don't have that option, I have really began to loathe ordering anything directly from the Mint. I don't even want to know what might happen if you return something ! Don't get me wrong, I have not had to send anything back to the Mint, but lately with all the changes they seem to have bitten off more than they can chew, cuts in production and a new fulfillment center have not helped , and I have heard plenty of stories of poor quality. Send it back and hope you don't get someone else's rejects in return....

I agree you are taking a chance on any product you order from the mint. All items are packaged fast and furious. I am sure they do some quality control, but there is no way for them to physically check each and every set that comes through the line. We would be back ordered forever if this were the case. I purchased the Ultra high relief and when it came it had the smallest spot at three o'clock. I was disappointed, but nevertheless I kept it. I could have sent it back and ordered another, then again could have the same problem. I believe on higher priced products such as the UHR they should have done a better job with the quality control and rejected it. But just goes to show you, I kept it and probably many others have done the same.

My father and I ordered 3 sets. One for each of us and one for his friend. Luckily I got to pick first, because one of the Kennedy half dollars was scratched right above the date. I was happy with the set I got. But yes I agree the quality control at the mint isn't the best. I just hope the silver proof sets we plan on getting are in better shape.
