Good afternoon,

This is a cool one. Never seen one like this before so I need help identifying whether this is a mint error or PMD. it seems like some type of error. I also know unfortunately it is possible someone could have tried to make a penny worth something by altering it.
It looks like part of the memorial was struck onto Lincoln's face somehow.
If this is an error, can someone explain what type.
Let me know if you need more pictures.

Thank you,
Billie Jean

It's a Vise Job. Not an error. PMD. Worth 1 cent. https://www.error-ref.com/squeeze-j...-garage-job/

THANK you for the information regarding idenifying Vice jobs in the future. Sad people would actually spend time trying to ruin the Lincoln cents.

I would assume that 99.9% of vice jobs had nothing to do with altering the coin. Sometimes you just need a little bit of soft metal to serve as a buffer in a vice, and a cent works great. If you grip a soft steel object directly with the rough gripping pads of a hard steel vice, you will scar the soft steel if you really bite down hard with the leverage.

Agree--not all 'vise jobs' are the result of nefarious intent.
