At first I thought this might be a misaligned collar clash, but now I am not so sure. The pits or uneven areas above Liberty do not correspond precisely to the reed spacing on a dime. There are also not matching clash marks found on the rim. So what caused these unusual areas on an otherwise well struck, lightly circulated dime?

I went back and took a few more images of this coin. The damage does extend into the rim. I poked around Error Ref, but the most similar phenomenon that I found was peripheral die damage. However, this coin appears to have incuse damage, where the article shows raised damage.

It seems more likely that this pattern was caused by some form of PMD. I find it a bit odd that the pattern on the rim seems mirrored to the dents in the field edge. I will toss this dime into the Box of Mysteries, to be reviewed at some future point.

The pits were presumably produced by downward-facing burrs that are, in turn, reflective of peripheral die damage. Some die attrition errors incorporate a peripheral groove between the field and the design rim. That groove is also produced by a downward-facing burr.
