1999-P Dime With Strange Pits Or Voids Inside Rim. Misaligned Collar Clash? Defective Planchet?

The pits or uneven areas above Liberty do not correspond precisely to the reed spacing on a dime. There are also not matching clash marks found on the rim. Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6880 Posts	Posted 06/13/2026 1:39 pm I went back and took a few more images of this coin. The damage does extend into the rim. I poked around Error Ref, but the most similar phenomenon that I found was peripheral die damage. However, this coin appears to have incuse damage, where the article shows raised damage. https://www.error-ref.com/peripheral-die-damage/ It seems more likely that this pattern was caused by some form of PMD. I find it a bit odd that the pattern on the rim seems mirrored to the dents in the field edge. I will toss this dime into the Box of Mysteries, to be reviewed at some future point. mikediamond Pillar of the Community United States 2752 Posts	Posted 06/13/2026 4:04 pm The pits were presumably produced by downward-facing burrs that are, in turn, reflective of peripheral die damage. Some die attrition errors incorporate a peripheral groove between the field and the design rim. That groove is also produced by a downward-facing burr. Error coin writer and researcher.
