My husband got this coin as a tip where he works I was wondering about value and why is it gold when all other fifty cent pieces are typically silver? Any info would be nice

It doesn't have too much value in the gold. There is a process by which the coin is plated in a few microns(yes, microns) of gold. That is why you can find gold sets of coins for not much above face.

It is a standard clad coin with a tiny bit of gold. You could probably get a few dollars for it on ebay.

Gold plating coins is an aftermarket alteration and not done by the US Mint. Since 1971, the Kennedy half dollars for circulation have been made of copper nickel clad. It contained 90% silver in 1964 and 40% silver from 1965-1970.

Occasionally they will tone a goldish color, but if they were actually plated, that is someone making alterations.

Yeah. "Guilded", I believe is the correct term.

Years ago, I picked up a guilded Canadian 1967 (Centennial) nickel. More of a curiosity item than anything else.

Thanks so this is just basically a keepsake then? Kinda like the flat pennies that you can make at the amusement park?

Keepsake it is but I'd put it a notch above a flattened penny any day!

The gold plating adds nothing to the value, it is a minuscule amount of gold. Since the plating is considered to be an alteration, the coin is really only worth its face value- 50 cents. Some people will pay a bit more for it as a novelty but it isn't going to make you rich in 50 years.

As an aside, gilding refers to plating an object in gold, either through chemical means or the application of gold leaf. Guilding refers to something you might do in a MMORPG

It is still a neat coin worth keeping just because it is interesting.

I have a bunch of brass coated pennies I made while I was bored in Chemistry class.

But can you gild a guild?

Yes, even the gilders guild

(though they would not be too happy about it).
