There are three types of Silver, Gold, and Platinum Eagles. The Bullion versions have no mint mark and are the leading vehicle for precious metals investment. The bullion versions are only sold through a network of dealers and are not available to the general public through the Mint. The Uncirculated (burnished finish) versions carry the W mintmark and have been in production since 2006. These are meant to be collector coins with a price point lower than that of the proofs. The Proof versions also carry the West Point mint mark(since 2000 or so, prior to that they were minted in San Francisco and Philly) and they are the flagship collector version with the highest price point. The Uncirculated and Proof versions are sold directly by the US Mint.
