Yes, but not physically touching them.....I only "eyeball" them. I did spot a Wheat cent once laying on top and asked the cashier if I could "exchange it". She said yes. I do look VERY closely EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE A DISH OF THEM !
Guess I'm just not "forward" enough to ask to "rifle through" the entire batch everytime I have the chance.

Same here...a quick glance. I've picked up a few wheaties like that. One time I spotted a wheatie and asked to exchange it...the guy said he usually checks himself but I beat him to that one so he let me have it.

OK...since there is at least one vote for what is need a penny, I will explain.

The need a penny cup is the cup that sits in front of the cash register that generally sports a sign.
Need a penny take a penny
Have a penny give a penny
It is generally filled with pennies and sometimes other higher denominations.
The thought behind it is, if you need a penny you can take a penny (if you only have 1.00 and the total is 1.01)
In turn if you have an extra penny, drop it in the cup for the next guy. (not a required action on your part either way)

The local Hot Dog joint (Pott's in Bethlehem Pa.) Has a sign that always comes to mind.
It Goes like this
Need a penny take a penny
Have a penny give a penny
Need two...get a job

I also glance at register trays. Once, at Payless, I noticed a Mercury dime in the till. I told the cashier that she had a silver coin in her register. She opened it back up and pulled out the "funny looking dime". Then she noticed that there were more. It was nearly a whole role. She had probably given some out in change already. She let me buy the rest at face value.

I voted yes, but I do what eagle does - look but don't touch; I can't bring myself to "rifle" through it.
