Hi all,
I'm heading for New York City at the end of August (I'll be there for a week). Mainly I'm staying around Manhattan area and I believe some of you people in the forum would know about numismatic stores / coins dealers that I might want to visit.

Oh, and just to mention, I'm looking for some stores/dealers that would sell world coins and banknotes - my main numismatic interest lies with Third Reich, Soviet Union and Austro-Hungarian empire.

Let me know, if there are any stores or dealers that you might want to recommend.

New York City presents an issue for the local coin collector (myself included). The cost of living/rent drives coin prices high making it not as enjoyable upon purchase. I have as a tourist overpaid outside of the US yet saw that as part of the travel experience, as you can always remember where you purchased the coin.

Specifically, there are a couple dealers to consider:

1) Stack's - 123 West 57th Street • New York, NY 10019 • 212 582-2580

They do mostly auctions yet have some available supply mostly US. Pricey.

2) Chelsea Coins & Currency - 40 W 25th St New York, NY 10010 (212) 255-3782ý

Diego is the guy's name - his real focus on currency with a large variety. Has coins, pricey. Call in advance to make sure he is there.

I have never had good luck with coin stores in NYC. Most of them that advertise as coin stores, are jewelry store, that have a box or so of coins "over there, somewhere", or pawn shops. I have pretty much given up on coin shopping when I go there.
Rest in Peace

Possibly the biggest coincidence of my life happened last summer when my wife and I, and daughter and grandkids, went to New York City.

We had already booked our hotel. Primary reason for going was to see the Yankees play during their last year in Yankee Stadium. But, I also wanted to look around in Stacks.

So, when we arrived at our hotel, guess what! It was located at 123 West 57th Street. Stacks was actually part of the same building.

Went in and looked around. Treated very nicely, but didn't have money for what the store had for sale.

Again, what a coincidence.

My recommendation, is to try to look around outside the city. (if you can)
I live about 80 miles outside the city. A very large percentage of dealers come and buy from outside the city.
They are not shy about throwing the cash around. Then, they go back into the city and somehow make a profit on what they buy.
It is worth looking around though, you never know what you might find
Rest in Peace

I remember looking this up once and was disappointed to see the lack of stores. Probably as was referenced earlier the cost of doing business in NYC. There are a bunch of coin stores in northern NJ if you can get over there for a few hours.

If you are still in NY come September 5th/6th you are more than welcome to attend the Staten Island coin show. Its a decent scene with a nice sized collection up for sale.

But bewarned! Even though we are officially part of New York City, the drive to and from the city is a major pain. Public transportation is an option though getting around the island can be confusing for out-of-towners.

Let me know if youre interested (or anyone else for that matter) and i'll post some better details.

I've never had any luck in NYC. I am usually downtown and haven't even been able to find a real shop after my address. Like someone else said, they are usually some other type of shop.

Anyone know of any in Brooklyn? I'm sometimes there too.
