I've been trying to find some information about this $1 Bank of De Soto for the last year and have found nothing so far. I paid $30 for it and was wondering what the real value is of it.

Interesting, it seems as though Desoto, NE no longer exists per Wikipedia-

Quote:
De Soto is a former community in Washington County, Nebraska, United States. It was named in honor of the Sixteenth Century Spanish Explorer, Hernando De Soto. De Soto was founded in 1855 and served as the county seat from 1858-1866. During its heyday, the town hosted many flourishing new businesses: hotels, saloons, stores, newspapers and banks2. The last building, the De Soto Store, was torn down in 1978.

I believe it is intaglio because there is a 3D look to the printing rather than an overprint.

Here are a couple listed for sale. Go down and look under 1863. There are two dated 1862. Yours looks to be in much better condition. They have them priced at 95.00 and 75.00.

This note appears to be listed in the Haxby book as NE-25 G10c. The listed value is VG $20.00 VF $35.00 and UNC $55.00 but the prices in Haxby are very outdated and you should look at the archives on Heritage or ebay for more up to date pricing. This is a very nice note.

I just checked Heritage archives and there was an UNC note that sold for $138 in November 2008. It is the payable in Desoto version where your note is payable in New York. The payable in Desoto version is listed in Haxby at $25 in UNC. Your note is listed at $55 in UNC. So your note is more valuable than the one in Heritage but your note looks circulated. Hope this helps.
