I have been reading opinions on slabbed coins and how to open them. Well, I bit the dust today and opened my first slab; 63 flb franklin. Although it is not a very expensive coin, it still took a few guts. The toned coin looks very good in my dansco; not quite half way through with it but it looks might good to me. Welcome to the club. I cracked my first one out last week. Although it was an unknown basement type slab with a very misgraded coin it was good enough to fill the hole in the album until an upgrade comes along

How is the best way to crack these and open them?

That's a good question 2old. I have the hardest time getting the slabs open without possibly damaging the coin. I use the hammer and chisel method. I know they were designed to be hard to open but if anyone has a safer method I'd like to hear it also.

I'm thinking about doing this myself for my Intercept Shield Kennedy album. I'm being very picking and trying to get MS 65 and PF 67+ coins for this album. If I can pick up some MS 69 or PF 69 PCGS slabs on E-bay for $10 or under, I think it's worth it for me.

I like the dremel tool idea. I have one and will give that a try. I should have thought of that. Thanks!

Great video ... thanks for digging that up. It makes it look easy and safe...I'll give it a try. It sure beats the hammer and chisel method!

Crack number 2. I opened my second slab today. It was harder that the first because the coin was work alot more (PCGS MS65 FBL 1949 Franklin). I did borrow a Dremel this time (also put a dremel on my birthday gift list with a big star for my wife). I am sure is just like anything else you practice-it will get easier.......
